KARACHI:

One day the only water in Karachi will be at Sea View — but you won’t be able to drink it.

That scenario has started to loom apocalyptically close this summer. In a bid to understand the crisis, The Express Tribune takes a look at the politics of hydrants and water tankers, which are being tried as the main culprits.

Hydrants or taps are being destroyed for what the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KW&SB) says is stealing from main city water lines.

The hydrant owners swear they are selling groundwater and not stealing from the city supply.

There is no groundwater in Karachi to begin with. “Subsoil water in Karachi is at least 800 feet down and even that is very brackish,” says KW&SB MD Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi. “It is so brackish that you can’t even put a drop on your tongue… We know that there is no water down there. It’s all in our own lines.”

Studies prove this.
