Business loss: NWA elders demand end to demolition of bazaars

PESHAWAR: Tribal elders from North Waziristan Agency (NWA) have demanded the government and security forces not to demolish shops in bazaars in their hometowns.

Addressing journalists at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, Malik Khan Marjan said, “We have heard security forces want to demolish markets and stores in Miranshah and Mirali bazaars.” Marjan, tribal elders and traders from the two areas stated that businessmen had vacated the shops and abandoned their belongings in haste at the start of the military operation.

They left behind expensive commodities such as electronics, and also perishable items that have now expired. Elders asked the government for at least time to allow traders and shopkeepers to transfer their belongings before their shops are destroyed.

Elders and traders also urged the federal government to repatriate people of those areas in NWA that security forces claim to be free of militant activity.

The people of NWA have suffered enough human and material loss, Marjan added. The group demanded the government compensate displaced families, and hastens efforts to help them return to their hometowns.
