Actor Arjun Rampal has been summoned by Mumbai police for meeting jailed gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, The Hindu reported on Tuesday.

Rampal, who is portraying Gawli in an under-production film Daddy, was sent a letter in which he was asked to appear for questioning due to his ‘unauthorised’ meeting with the gangster.

“We recently learnt about the meeting and are inquiring into the matter,” said Senior Inspector at JJ Marg police station Anil Madvi.

He reportedly met Gawli last year in December at a government-run hospital.

Police sources say the letter was delivered to the Rampal’s residence, who is yet to respond to it.

“We sent a letter to the actor last week directing him to appear before us at the earliest so that we can question him to ascertain the reason for the meeting. The letter was hand-delivered at the actor’s Bandra residence and his wife received it,” the senior inspector said.

According to sources, the handsome actor met the jailed gangster – who is serving a life sentence for the murder of corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar in 2007 — to study his mannerisms and personality for his role in the film.
